Off to the library we go! In order to get a better understanding about the mural designing process, we took a class trip across the way and into our university's library. The class raided the mural book section and pretty much checked out a good chunk of the books available that were relevant to our class. We wanted to see different types of murals that had been painted by small and largely known artists in the past. These books would help us in understanding what images to formulate in our mural sketches.
We broke up into various groups in class. Based on our former class discussions of the interviews and themes that we associated with the Migrant Head Start Center, we began to sketch out ideas for the mural.
Here we are comparing the different sketches that the groups came up with. By presenting our various sketched ideas to our classmates, we slowly began to discuss what we wanted and what images worked best for the mural as a whole.
As you can tell, much thinking and deliberation took place. The mural workshop can only function if we all agree on the design. After all, the mural is for the Migrant Head Start community and we only want the best for them.
This spring quarter, the UC Davis Chicano Studies Mural Workshop class is designing and painting a mural at the Migrant Head Start Center located in Woodland. The center is a valuable resource for many of the migrant parents and Woodland community members that live in region. Our goal is to create a mural that reflects the Migrant Head Start Center in all of its aspects and what it brings to the community. We invite you to follow along as we share with you our mural creation experience.
